Now THAT'S a horse of a different color

This is a horse I started under saddle in 2003. He was 2 years old when these first pictures were taken. Some of you might already know that white (called "grey") horses don't start out white. This is Cole, who was born black, then went to dark bay, then to grey, and now he's almost white. Compare these pictures I got of him when he was 2 with the ones I took of him yesterday as a 7 year old. In another year or so he will likely be all white with some small brown flecks (called "fleabitten grey").

Full body picture as a 2 year old

You've never met horse lips as investigative as these.

If you believe me that it's really the same horse...

Old Pictures of Our House

I just found these old pictures of us working on the house in June 07 when we bought it and thought you might enjoy seeing the documentation of some of our efforts. This first shot is of me scraping the popcorn texture off of the ceiling. It had to come down since the previous owners had been heavy smokers who lived there for 17 years. To get this stuff off you have to spray it with water and then scrape it. We sprayed it with water, and it dripped off the ceiling the color and consistency of maple syrup, and smelled like a wet ashtray. Also interesting to note that I had to SCRUB the refrigerator/freezer because of the smell, and I even was scraping brownish tarry goo out of the inside of the freezer, behind the icebox. If the inside of the freezer behind the icebox was that bad, can you imagine what these people's LUNGS look like?
Since our house was built in stages, originally made in 1920, the floors aren't even. Owen did help the situation thus giving us somewhat even carpeting by nailing plywood to the floors in his office and our bedroom.
After the popcorn was scraped off the ceiling, all of the ceilings and walls primed and painted, all the woodwork lacquered, the cupboards disassembled, primed, painted, and reassembled, the refrigerator sterilized, all the carpet in the house ripped out and replaced, new flooring put into my office, new ceiling tiles put in the mud room, some of the floors leveled, the front door sanded down, stained, and lacquered (all of this was done in approximately one week, as we had to be out of our apartment but couldn't move into the house until these were done because of allergies and asthma), not to mention actually MOVING our stuff... We finally settled down to our first meal in our new house. Mac 'N Cheese.
The dogs spent the week of blitzing through the house outside tied to a tree where they wouldn't have access to buckets of paint. They had quite a time howling in code to the neighbor dogs like on 101 Dalmations.
Here I am mopping the kitchen for the zillionth time trying to get the dust from the popcorn ceiling up. I've never looked so much like a housewife.

The man who listens to horses

This is our newest client horse here for training. She is a 3 year old quarter horse named Dancer. Owen really likes her. I always take a few photos of new horses for a binder of data-sheets that I keep in the tack room, and here are some of the ones I liked best of this filly.

Crisis Averted

We can still eat! This has been a stressful few weeks for me. On August 25, I was told that I was getting laid off from HP. Luckily for me, a "little birdy" told me I should start looking for another job back at the beginning of August. I immediately scrubbed my resume and applied for several jobs inside HP. I also sent it to some friends who forwarded it to some managers that might be hiring. One of those managers had a job opening, so I got an interview and today, I was offered a job. I will still be working for HP, but instead of working on printers, I will be working on network storage. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage for more information on network storage - it is a little technical). I actually went out to Beaverton, OR for the interview (some teams are in Beaverton, others are here in Ft. Collins - I'll be able to stay in Ft. Collins). The people I talked to really seem to enjoy the project they are working on, and their coworkers. From what I have learned, this looks like a very interesting project and should be a lot of fun. So, sometime around Monday (9/8), I should start working my new job! Woohoo!
